Ready to Retire? Think Georgia Before Heading Too Far SouthPosted on March 27, 2017
Those eager to retire in the South often make a beeline for Florida’s warm weather, sprawling beaches and income-tax-free living. But retirement pros say they may be overlooking an option that’s both interesting and less overrun with retirees: Georgia, Florida’s neighbor to the north.
Georgia has mild winters, striking architecture and delectable restaurants that reflect plenty of Southern charm, world-class golf courses and—for those looking to travel in their golden years—one of the largest airports in the nation, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International. While Georgia does have income tax, the state’s rules are favorable to retirees—$65,000 of retirement income, which includes income from IRAs and 401(k)s, is exempt for those 65 and up, says Paul Jacobs, a financial planner at Palisades Hudson Financial Group in Atlanta.
Athens, Georgia ranks as one of the top cities in Georgia to retire. Athens may be best known as a music mecca—for years, it was home base for bands including R.E.M. and the B-52s, and Rolling Stone magazine once named it the No. 1 college music city in the country. But the city’s greatest hits aren’t limited to its playlist: There are plenty of cultural events, including dance, opera and a symphony, as well as continuing education courses through the University of Georgia.
Indeed, Athens offers that quintessential college town experience that growing numbers of retirees are seeking. That’s all mixed with antebellum architecture and the loyal support by residents of the University of Georgia football team.
As with other college towns, Athens isn’t rocking year round, says Protos. In effect, while there is a lot going on during the school year, there is often a drop-off in activities during breaks. Residents also have to drive roughly an hour and a half to get to the Atlanta airport (Athens has an airport, but it’s tiny, served by only a few flights).
Athens also offers award winning neighborhoods and communities such as The Georgia Club. When you become a resident at The Georgia Club, you may be buying a home, but you are gaining a community. The Georgia Club prides itself on the sense of family that their neighborhoods provide. The charming neighborhoods include beautiful streetscapes, their own special parks, world-class amenities and distinctive architectural features designed to foster kinship.
The Georgia Club currently offers 8 neighborhoods all with singular personalities. Charleston Park is one such neighborhood that exemplifies its own unique style. It presents as a collection of exceptional two-story homes that have master bedroom down or up with an elevator, with a distinctive blend of contemporary conveniences and historically inspired architecture with walled courtyards inspired by Charleston side-yard homes. With building traditions rooted deeply in the South, open floor plans are light-filled, with great rooms and kitchens that welcome family and friends. And its rocking chair front porches are conveniently placed closer to the wide sidewalks to make neighborly interaction easier when walking through the neighborhood. Charleston Park neighbors can also gather around their exclusive wood burning fire pit for camaraderie.
Take your golf cart for a spin or stretch your legs on a nice stroll to the club house through the private, lit tunnel that adjoins our gated community and walking and golf cart paths. Every building from the Village Hall to the Post Office is designed to bring neighbors and friends together. Looking to get involved, you can take up gardening in the community garden. The Developer ensured the master site plan had as their main focus the people living in it. The Georgia Club’s emphasis is making a house feel like a home and a community feel like a family.
With amenities around every corner and walking paths spread throughout the property, The Georgia Club is truly one of a kind. This community has its own village green where events are held from outdoor movie night to Easter Egg Hunts. The world class amenities include a fitness center offering personal trainers, six
har-tru lighted tennis courts, three nine-hole golf courses and a resort-style swimming complex to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
