The Holiday season is upon us and that means tons of local events and shopping to get you in the spirit! Check out these can’t miss dates:
Black Friday Board Game Marathon | November 23rd
Local board game cafe, Rook & Pawn, is continuing its tradition of hosting a board game marathon on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Part of the proceeds will go on to support Books For Keeps. They’ve mapped out 24 hours of gameplay, and you can participate in as much of it as you’d like. This is the perfect family-friendly alternative to Black Friday shopping. Ben Burton Full Moon Hike | November 23rd | $2-3
Get bundled up and head out to Ben Burton Park for a hike under a fall full moon. Pre-registration is required for this event. Explore the trails of the along the Middle Oconee River for some great post-Thanksgiving exercise. Get more information about the hike here and pre-register for it here.
Hanukkah Show With Klezmer Local 42 & The Hobohemians | December 2nd | $7-10
Two musical groups are joining together and putting on a show at The Foundry to celebrate the start of Hanukkah. Purchase tickets here.
7th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting | November 30th

Classic City Tour Of Homes | December 3rd | $10-15
People from all over gather together in Athens for this annual event, hosted by UGA Miracle, a student-run group dedicated to raising money for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit some of the University of Georgia’s multi-million dollar sorority and fraternity houses on Milledge Avenue— all decorated for the holidays! Downtown Athens Christmas Parade | December 6th
The parade is an Athens staple and this year’s theme is Christmas Around The World. It kicks off at 7pm and ends in front of City Hall for the tree lighting. A can’t miss evening for the holiday season!
A Hippopotamus For Christmas | December 8th
Do you want a hippopotamus for Christmas? Head over to the Athens-Clarke County Library for a silly seasonal storytime all about hippos. Complete with related crafts and the spirit of Christmas. For children ages 2-8 and their family/friends. Get more information here.
2018 Christmas Tour Of Homes | December 8th | $25-30
Tour Georgia Club homes that truly embody being “home for the holidays.” The Georgia Club Foundation’s Christmas Tour of Homes will feature five beautiful and unique homes are sure to be a highlight of the season. Story Time With Santa Claus | December 8th | Donations Accepted
Avid Bookshop will be hosting a special story time with Miss Rachel and Santa Claus from 11 am to 1 pm. Happening at their Prince Avenue location, this event is free and family friendly— although donations will be accepted. Keep up with the event details here.
Breakfast With Santa | December 9th | $20-25
Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s looking for pancakes! Join him, along with your family, for breakfast at The Classic Center which will benefit the Classic Center Cultural Foundation. Find out all the details and purchase tickets here.
Athens Holiday Market at Big City Bread | December 13-14th
The 2018 Holiday market is a two nights event in the courtyard at Big City Bread cafe. Local artists and craftspeople from around Georgia will be selling their wares under the stars at this evening event. There will be live music and bonfires! The Nutcracker | December 22-23rd
