Experience a Rich Arts & Culture Scene in Athens GeorgiaPosted on August 23, 2016
The brilliance of the talent and the breadth of choice is nearly stupefying. “The B-52s” and “Widespread Panic” cut their teeth in Athens. Since then, no one has looked back. Jazz, classical, blues, country and rock are all of virtually equal excellence. The New York Times got it right, calling Athens “Live Music Central.” The town’s clubs and bars are as diverse as the music played inside—and outside of them, helping to create a cosmopolitan ambiance that’s otherwise approached only by major metropolitan cities.
Though their founding members were either Athens-nurtured, if not born here, R.E.M. and the B-52s could not be more different in look, feel and sound. But there is something about this town that feeds the growth of such diverse music. Could it be the 40 Watt Club, a venue named after the bare bulb that lit its stage in the early days? Or simply the DIY attitude of the club credited with shaping the alternative and punk rock scene in Athens and beyond. As their performance space of choice, it has hosted Patti Smith, Drive-By-Truckers, and The Indigo Girls, Of Montreal and any indie band that’s rising. It’s still there…still rockin’ after all these years.
And have you heard of Wuxtry Records? Collectible vinyls and CDs plus many a conversation about music await. As one of its reviewers says, “you can’t do Athens and not do Wuxtry’s.” Rolling Stone also gives a nod to Wuxtry’s as one of 25 best record stores in the country. You need to go there.
The University of Georgia, Athens’ conspicuous raison d’étre, offers its own welter of cultural delights. The Athens Symphony concerts are more or less constant and the Studio Dance Academy’s “Nutcracker” is one of the most charming to be seen anywhere. The intimate Morton Theatre itself is worth a visit. The Georgia Museum of Art is associated with the University, a landmark of stunning modern architecture. Recently, the University’s “Master Calendar” listed more than 40 events open to the public in a single week! Concerts, lectures, book signings, special exhibits, sports events are all right around the corner from The Georgia Club.
The Georgia Club residents get it all when living in this location. They are surrounded by arts and culture in all directions. They have the small town feel of downtown Statham but are also surrounded by the big city life. Living at The Georgia Club gives you the best of both worlds.
