  • LOCAL SCHOOLS IN BARROW  AND OCONEE COUNTIES

Located just outside the college town of Athens, it’s no wonder the region surrounding the Georgia Club boasts an abundance of learning opportunities and a certain academic ethos. From top-rated school district stats and rigorous honors programs to work-based learning modules that give students on-the-job experience, Barrow and Oconee Counties offer young scholars diverse pathways to success.

    Barrow County School District

Barrow County School homes belong to Georgia’s fourth largest charter system, which has been named one of the top 10 in the state. The district is home to nine elementary schools, four middle schools and two high schools, with a new arts and sciences magnet school scheduled to open in the fall of 2020.

The Barrow County Charter System also works closely with the Sims Academy of Innovation and Technology. This academy is dedicated to helping students in grades nine through 12 develop technical skills and gain on-the-job experience, which can assist them in jumpstarting careers in industries ranging from robotics to the culinary arts. The academy shares Barrow’s Workforce Development Campus with Lanier Technical College, which offers dual-enrollment opportunities for students in the Barrow County School System.

    Oconee County School District

The Oconee County school district encompasses two high schools, two middle schools and seven elementary schools. Only one of four Georgia districts to get an “A” ranking two years in a row, this high-achieving school system has earned distinction on both the state and national level:

    • A 96 percent graduation rate puts the district in the top tier nationally.
    • Students have the second-highest SAT and ACT averages in the state.
    • North Oconee High and Oconee County High were ranked in the top 2 percent in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
    • The Oconee County School Board has been rated Exemplary by the Georgia School Boards Association.

The district also participates in Georgia’s Move On When Ready program, which allows high school students to dual-enroll and receives college credits while working on their diploma.

    Private Schools

You’ll also find a robust choice of private schools in the region that combine academic rigor with service and leadership opportunities. Institutions that enroll students from preschool to 12th grade include the prestigious Athens Academy and Saint Joseph Catholic Parish School as well as nearby Bethlehem Christian academy and Prince Avenue Christian School.
