Art Lovers Will Love Life at The Georgia Club
Posted on November 29, 2018One of the best amenities at The Georgia Club is its proximity to the vibrant and culturally rich university town of Athens, GA. Though renowned for its music scene, there is also a thriving arts community that caters to everyone from the casual appreciator to the most discerning aficionados.
Though we’ve previously documented the overall cultural scene of Athens, the robust art scene is worth exploring in more detail. The art world of Athens makes our Georgia Club community perfect for young families and retirees that are looking for a cosmopolitan lifestyle to go with their golf course Cosmopolitan cocktail.
Here are just a sampling of art resources and activities in Athens!
The Georgia Museum of Art
https://georgiamuseum.org/
Conveniently located in downtown Athens right on North campus, the Georgia Museum of Art is operated in association with the University of Georgia but also serves as the state’s official museum. The museum is free and open to the public six days a week.
The museum boasts over 9,000 sf of modern, bright space featuring over 10,000 objects in the permanent collection, including primarily 19th and 20th-century American paintings plus European and Asian works on paper. Notable artists on display include works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Frank Weston Benson, Childe Hassam, and more.
For a deeper dive into educational programming, the museum also organizes a variety of film series, lectures, and symposia throughout the year.
In addition to the permanent collection, Michael Lachowski of the museum public relations office notes, “We also offer about 20 temporary exhibitions each year, and hundreds of free programs for all ages. Visiting the museum several times a year will always result in a new experience.”

Our friend and fellow art enthusiast Jessica Smith at Flagpole magazine recently created an excellent rundown of the what and where of the Athens art scene:
