It's time for our annual golf course ratings and selecting the top courses this year has proved just as tough as in years past.
Nationally golf course construction has continued on its fast pace of the past few years. In Georgia alone six new courses opened this year according to the National Golf Foundation.
Among those opening is The Georgia Club, a Denis Griffiths design located in Statham, near Athens, which easily came in first in our vote as the "Best New Golf Course for 2001."
Griffiths has designed a course that can keep both the high-handicapper and the scratch golfer interested. Measuring 6,900 yards from the tips, the course plays to a par of 71. Built on 1,300 acres, the property has an abundance of hardwoods, several lakes and a creek that all come into play on this parkland-styled course. For a young course it's in top condition, and undoubtedly will only improve as it matures.
It would be difficult to select a favorite hole, but certainly the par 4 fifth has to rank right up there at the top. The longest par 4 at 453 yards, the hole is bordered by Barber Creek on the left and a lake on the right. Griffiths designed the hole around a huge hardwood tree that sits right of the fairway putting a premium on your second shot.
Mike Bishop, formerly with Chateau Elan, is the director of golf. A 36,000 square-foot clubhouse is due to open this Fall.
